How about learning more about the early history by exploring Presidential homes? This area is home to 5 US Presidential residences.

If you enjoy the great outdoors, there’s hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains and Shenandoah National Park, or you could go for a hot air balloon ride, take a horseback ride through the woods and vineyard, and there is cycling along the Intercontinental Bikeway right outside our door.

From active to relaxing, the activities in this area can provide you with an abundance of fresh air and fun to fill your days. Check out each of the links for our recommendations. We’ve even come up with suggestions for a few self-guided excursions for wineries & breweries, historical sites and hiking trails.

Historic Sites

This part of Virginia abounds in the history of this country’s early years. You can visit the homes and cabins of 5 presidents all within a 25-45 minute drive of Foxfield Inn. See the map for locations.

Start by visiting the three homes of former presidents Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe and James Madison.

While in the area be sure to drop by Michie Tavern just a short distance from Monticello. There is a restored tavern from around 1784, metal shop and general store with local goods for you to explore among other things.

The next morning tour the grounds of the University of Virginia, founded by Thomas Jefferson. Then head west to visit Woodrow Wilson’s birthplace, The Manse, in Staunton. It is also his Presidential library where his Pierce Arrow limousine is on display. It is a short drive from our bed and breakfast.

Last stop on your Presidential home tour is Pine Knot – Edith and Theodore Roosevelt’s rustic retreat. It is the most unpretentious home ever owned by a president – no electricity, heating or plumbing. It was truly a place for “rest and repairs” as described by Edith. Currently it is only open by appointment.

As you can see, you will need several days to see them all.

Wineries

Did you know that Virginia has over 300(!) wineries and is named “Birthplace of American Wine”? Our local Monticello Wine Trail fulfills Thomas Jefferson’s vision of having vineyards “standing shoulder to shoulder” with the great wines of the world.

The Charlottesville area itself is home to more than 40 wineries. Wines produced here have received national and international acclaim. If you are unsure which winery to look for, check out the annual Virginia Governor’s Cup Medal Winners and let your curiosity lead the way.

Still wondering where to start?

To help you plan your day, we put together a list of our favorites and clustered them according to their geographical location. Many wineries offer snacks or lunch, but our area also has great sandwich shops. We’ve included them in our tour, so you don’t miss them while you are on your way.

We recommend planning for no more than 3 wine tastings per day. But since “grapes don’t grow in ugly places” you might stop at other wineries just to enjoy the view and add them to your bucket list for your next visit.

  • Stinson Vineyards – our neighbors just down the road with a lovely view and award-winning wines
