Excursion #1: Self-Guided Wine/Beer Tour (Western Route)

Click here to view map.After savoring your three-course breakfast and sipping the last of your morning coffee, pack up your camera, a couple bottles of water, and head down our driveway, west towards Crozet. First stop? King Family Vineyards. Be sure to take some photos of the pristine grounds and breathtaking mountain views. Next, make a pit stop at Greenwood Gourmet Grocery. Browse the wide selection of unique and local gourmet foods and snacks, and order a few sandwiches or picnic foods to go. A short drive away is Pollak Vineyards. Enjoy their beautiful grounds and taste their uniquely French-inspired wines. When you’re ready, head to Veritas Vineyard & Winery. Bring your picnic lunch to enjoy on the porch or lawn, and sample their award-winning wines. If the weather’s nice, it’s easy to while away an afternoon. On your way back to the inn, why not stop off at Blue Mountain Brewery? Sample a flight of their popular and seasonal beers, take in the views from their expansive patio, and purchase a growler of your favorite brew to go. If you’re hungry and don’t have dinner reservations elsewhere, BMB also has a full menu for you to enjoy.

Suggested Timeline:
10:30 A.M. – Depart Foxfield Inn for King Family Vineyards. Enjoy their wood-burning fireplace and the polo grounds.
11:00 A.M. – Depart King Family for Greenwood Gourmet Grocery. Their sandwiches are delicious.
11:30 A.M. – Depart Greenwood for Pollak Vineyards.
12:15 P.M. – Depart Pollak for Veritas Vineyard & Winery. Enjoy your lunch on their deck overlooking the vineyard.
1:30 P.M. – Depart Veritas for Blue Mountain Brewery. Find a seat on the patio for fabulous views of the mountainside, especially in the fall.
Approximately 25 minute drive from Blue Mountain Brewery to return to Foxfield Inn

After savoring your three-course breakfast and sipping the last of your morning coffee, pack up your camera, a couple bottles of water for an all-day adventure through some of the prettiest of Virginia’s wine country. Your first stop is Blenheim Vineyards, owned by our hometown celebrity, Dave Matthews. Next, visit Trump Winery for a beautiful setting and exciting selection of wines. Make a pit stop at The Market for some snacks and a selection of gourmet sandwiches. At Keswick Vineyards, stop inside at the counter for your tasting (which includes both wine and chocolate), and then select a glass to sip while you eat your sandwiches on the patio. Finally, head to Barboursville Vineyards for one of the most impressive tastings in our area – you can sample as many as 20 wines. While you’re there, take a self-guided tour of the ruins of Governor Barbour’s mansion, and if it’s a weekend, consider joining a tour of the modern winery. An optional stop on your way home would be at Castle Hill Cider, a beautiful new addition to the world of cider-making featuring delicious apples unique to our region

10:30 A.M. – Depart Foxfield Inn for Blenheim Vineyard. What do you think of the Viognier?
11:30 A.M. – Depart Blenheim for Trump Winery.
12:00 A.M. – Depart Trump for The Market. The sandwiches are creative, tasty, and named for local landmarks.
1:00 P.M. – Depart The Market for Keswick Vineyards. Remember to try the chocolate sauce!
1:45 P.M. – Depart Keswick for Barboursville Vineyards. Take your time to enjoy the rustic and expansive tasting room.
3:30 P.M. – Depart Barboursville for Castle Hill Cider. A refreshing way to cleanse your palate.
Approximately 30 minute drive from Castle Hill to return to Foxfield Inn

Excursion #3: History Buff Tour

Virginia plays a rich part in our nation’s history, and Charlottesville is a veritable mecca of historical landmarks. Begin your enrichment at Thomas Jefferson’s home, Monticello. (You did reserve your Neighborhood Pass tour tickets, right?) After your tour, head back down the mountain for lunch at the historic Michie Tavern to enjoy period foods and costumes. Next, visit Ash Lawn-Highland to learn about the life of James Monroe. Head to the Downtown Mall for an interesting blend of past and contemporary history. The self-guided walking tour will take you around Court Square and highlight interesting features of the mall’s architecture and history. When you’ve worked up an appetite, settle in for a meal at a restaurant that smells delicious, and sit on the patio for some people-watching, if the weather’s nice.

9:45 A.M. –  Depart Foxfield Inn for Monticello
10:30 A.M. – Tour Monticello
12:15 P.M. – Depart Monticello for lunch at Michie Tavern, and have an extra piece of fried chicken for us.
1:30 P.M. –  Depart Michie Tavern for Ash Lawn-Highland

Approximately 15 minute drive from Downtown to return to Foxfield Inn
