We gave you a quick guide to the many presidential homes and estates in a semi-short driving distance to Charlottesville just this February, but we wanted to talk a bit more about the one most guests tend to visit: Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello.
Monticello, Thomas Jefferson’s Charlottesville estate, draws crowds to visit Charlottesville. Not only is it a beautiful estate full of history and fabulous tour guides to lead you through, but it also has great events to attend throughout the year.
We know that if you love history, or even if you just find it somewhat interesting, Monticello would be a great spot for you to check out when you’re in town. We’re here to preview a few events for you that are coming up this year, mostly in the next month!
The Heritage Harvest Festival – Saturday, September 22
This will be the 12th annual celebration of this festival that is one of the biggest that Monticello holds through the year. Yes, this festival is a bit more than a few months away, but we wanted to let you know about it now so you can schedule in advance if it seems interesting to you. We personally love this festival because it celebrates gardening and sustainable agriculture with a family friendly atmosphere that includes shopping at a vendor market including local food and artisans, workshops, speakers on the subject of agriculture, gardening, and culinary arts, and activities for children.
The Heritage Harvest Festival is definitely one of our favorites to attend in Charlottesville every year, so we of course think it’s a great time to visit the area!
Check out more on their website. Many details aren’t quite planned out for this year, but check back soon to see as they add to the site!
Painting and Sketching in the Garden – Thursday, May 10th
This smaller event, coming up soon, will include simple line drawing and watercolor technique instruction. You may bring your own materials, but all will be provided as well. It’s an opportunity to relax and paint in the beautiful gardens of Monticello. It sounds like a great event for anyone that enjoys art.
Wine and Roses Open House – Saturday, May 19
Celebrate the rose, a flower that Jefferson adorned the Monticello landscape with. This open house will include speaker Peggy Cornett, Monticello’s Coordinator of Plants, and Gabriele Rausse, “Father of Virginia Wine,” who will host a wine tasting from 12-2. We think this event sounds like a Saturday well spent!
Independence Day Celebration and Naturalization Ceremony – Wednesday, July, 4th
What better way to celebrate the birth of our nation than at Monticello? Listen to powerful speakers and music played by local groups. You can preview last year’s naturalization ceremony at this link and see what you can expect if you attend! It really is a wonderful event and a great way to celebrate the 4th!
These are just a few events taking place at Monticello in the upcoming months, but we encourage you to check out their events page and see what interests you! They have plenty of events each month
