Our Lady of the Angels Monastery Cheese, Foxfield Inn

Not far from our Charlottesville VA bed and breakfast is the wonderful monastery Our Lady of the Angels.  Every week the nuns make the most delicious Gouda cheese.  We have been very lucky that every year someone gives a wheel of this delicious cheese as a present.
The monastery, the youngest in the Trappist Order continues the Benedictine tradition of prayer work with the work of prayer.  It is not the easiest place to find but once you’ve made it down the gravel road and over the one-lane bridge you’ve gone through some beautiful scenery.

In 1990 the nuns began making Gouda cheese as a means of self-support.  Each batch of cheese is made with milk from Shenandoah Valley grass-fed and pastured cows.  The nuns use techniques developed in The Netherlands to make their mild and mellow Dutch-style Gouda.  The Gouda is available year round and is sold in 2 pound wheels.

So if you are staying with us at Foxfield Inn why not take an idyllic drive through the country, visit the monastery and buy some delicious cheese.  After all it’s only 10 minutes away.

See you there!
