Historic Garden Week starts on Saturday, April 16th with events in the Charlottesville area. So if you are staying at Foxfield Inn make sure you take in some of the events. Tours and discussions at Morven Estate, Farmington, Monticello and University of Virginia continue through the week. Historic Garden Week is sponsored by the Garden Club of Virginia. On Saturday April 16th you can tour Morven Estate a three-story brick manor house completed in 1820 by local builder Martin Thacker in the late-Georgian/Federal style. The gardens around the main house include a pair of Osage oranges, the state champion Chinese chestnut, and a lovely dove tree. Many beautiful flowers including thousands of tulips, pansies, forget-me-nots, lilacs, wisteria, spireas, deutzia and roses are in the extensive gardens. The garden was renovated in the 1930s by Annette Hoyt Flanders.
Then take in the houses on tour in the Farmington area on Sunday and Monday. There are 11 gardens available for you to see with some of the houses open for touring as well.
Monticello has 3 lectures and a spring wildflower walk planned during the week. Andrea Wulf will discuss her new book Founding Gardeners. The Revolutionary Generation, Nature and the Shaping of the American Nation. Peter Hach talks about Thomas Jefferson as a gardener and Peggy cornett provides an illustrated lecture on historic plants. There will also be tours of the various gardens at Monticello and Tufton Farm.
